Etch-a-Sketch-a-ism

October 16th, 2008

I love when a product intended for children takes on a life and culture of it’s own. For example, in circuit bending, the Texas Intruments Speak n Spell has created a whole new musical experience for many.

On my last internet voyage I came across the good ‘ol Ohio Art Etch-a-Sketch taken to the next level. There’s a whole subculture of people who buy these, spend hours creating detailed artworks then lock the knobs into place. Thus preserving the artwork for prosperity.

I read an article about a man that has been doing it for fifteen years. He said he always carries an Etch-a-Sketch on him and felt nervous without one- that’s dedication mixed with a hint of addiction and a pinch of compulsion. Just the way I like it!

What happens if someone shakes it?

Good point. I didn’t think of that. Guess they keep them really still. Here is the interview I read( http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/lifestyle/etch21.shtml )it says “He fixes them in place before he sells them — although fixing, in Etch A Sketch terms, is an act of hope.”
